Impact Story: Charles G. Will Scholarships

On May 14, 2024, the Upper Arlington Education Foundation (UA+Ed) presented the annual Charles G. Will Scholarship Awards to Zoe A. (Senior), Charlie J. (Junior), Nick A. (Sophomore), and Reid M. (Freshman) alongside Susie Rudolph Harpham and Jim Howe alumni of class ‘59.

“Zoe is a thoughtful student who has demonstrated a strong effort in all our work this semester, whether it's a minor exercise or a major writing task. Zoe's writing is consistently vivid and detailed, and her writer's voice is sincere and expressive, which makes it a pleasure to read. Each time I collect a written response, I can look forward to Zoe's, knowing her engagement is genuine and her response will go well beyond the minimum requirement. The thinking and the integrity that Zoe puts into her writing makes a difference!” - Nominated by Alison McPherson

I am nominating Charlie to be the Junior Class recipient of the Charles G. Will Award after consistently observing his determination to develop and improve his quality of writing with meticulous attention to accuracy, strength of argument, and depth of thought. I have appreciated Charlie’s willingness to seek and respond to meaningful feedback during the writing process. He seems to genuinely appreciate and contemplate the input of his teachers and peers, exhibiting a desire to understand and acquire specific writing skills, not simply to reach a benchmark or to achieve a grade. I have been impressed with Charlie’s thorough planning and processing on written tasks, striving for improved and polished work. Charlie has regularly engaged with class texts and concepts with critical analysis and thoughtful consideration, and this curiosity and insight is evident in his written expression. Charlie’s perseverance should be commended, and I believe that he is deserving of this recognition as he continues to grow as an academically minded writer.”  - Nominated by Megan Bills

“Nick approaches his studies with a seriousness and a willingness to work on his assignments that have helped him grow as a writer and thinker this year. He takes the time to draft and revise his essays carefully, working to learn how to craft better writing and more effective communication. He also helps to keep those around him on track during class work time.” - Nominated by Melissa Hasebrook

“Reid has emerged as a solid writer this year. He always pays attention in class to writing instruction and works hard to improve his writing. I am proud of him and his progress and commitment to his writing craft.”  Nominated by Michael Donelson

Scholarship Overview

The Upper Arlington High School Class of 1959 established an endowment fund to honor Mr. Charles G. Will, an educator who had a profound impact on their education.

In his memory, the fund acknowledges underclassmen who have demonstrated significant improvement and progression in their writing—our emerging writers.

Winners receive a gift card and a book (picked by their teacher) and will be surprised by members of the Class of '59 during their Language Arts class.

This initiative not only celebrates emerging writers at UAHS but also exemplifies the power of a class united in giving back to their alma mater. Future graduates will be inspired by this spirit of generosity and will continue the tradition of supporting the next generation of Golden Bears.

Selection Process

Each spring, Upper Arlington High School Language Arts teachers select one recipient from the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. Teachers are also asked to recommend a book for each winning student. The Class of '59 purchases the recommended book, which is presented to the student along with a gift card.

The Upper Arlington Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides access to meaningful opportunities for students that are beyond the budget of the Upper Arlington School District. Established in 1985, UA+Ed is permanently structured to fund programs and projects today and for generations to come. The Upper Arlington Alumni Association is an important part of the foundation and keeps graduates connected, engaged, and motivated to pay it forward.
