UA+Ed Foundation Grant in Action: Hour of Code

October 28, 2024 - November 11, 2024 | Barrington, Greensview, Tremont, Wickliffe, Windermere, and Upper Arlington High School

From October 28- November 11, 2024, students in Upper Arlington High School’s computer science program and Education Pathway had the unique opportunity to partner with the Elementary Explorations teams to teach coding—both unplugged and digital—to kindergarten through fifth-grade students across the district's five elementary schools: Barrington, Greensview, Tremont, Wickliffe, and Windermere. The initiative, made possible by funding from the High School PTO and a grant from the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, reached approximately 3,000 students.

The Story Behind the Grant

The Hour of Code 2024 initiative was designed to foster the development of the Profile of an Engaged Learner among both high school and elementary students. High school students had the opportunity to collaborate closely with peers, teachers, and younger students, honing their teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. These students were encouraged to be empathetic, open-minded, and role models for the younger learners while fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

For the elementary students, the Hour of Code experience allowed them to be solution-seekers, demonstrating creativity, resilience, and critical thinking as they tackled coding challenges, from basic to more advanced concepts. The program also emphasized the district’s mission and values by providing real-world, authentic learning experiences for students in the high school’s pathway programs.

Creating Lasting Impressions

"My child just came home from Hour of Code at Tremont. They spoke very highly of Mr. G. They specifically appreciated the way he interacted with them, and their peers, letting them teach, and asking clarifying questions of the 4th/5th graders. They appreciated that you let the kids be kids. They never saw themselves teaching in elementary school, but today they said they enjoyed the kids and might see themselves teaching older elementary. Thank you for incorporating the high schoolers and giving them such a positive experience!”
